"Pale Blue Dot" by ORDER

Pale Blue Dot from ORDER on Vimeo.

A visual response to Carl Sagan's famed 'Pale Blue Dot' monologue, where he muses on our planet's appearance in a photograph taken by the Voyager 1 space probe. The most distant photograph ever taken of Earth. This was a free-time project, designed and created in After Effects with extensive sound work created to sit along side the music from Cosmos and spoken word from Sagan. I had wanted to bring visuals to Sagan's words for some time and finished this after working on it periodically over the last 3 months. Thanks for taking the time to view.

Paperman Breakdown by John Kahrs -- via itsartmag

"This is a great first look at the technology and techniques that have been created for and used on the animated short, "Paperman".
If you don't know what Paperman is, check out the links below.  Director, John Kahrs and the team working on this film have definitely put a lot of thought and heart into it.
The line between 2D and 3D is slowly beginning to blend together.  The debate between mediums will continue, no doubt, but Paperman is sure to break some new ground and combine the best of both worlds.  We shall see.
Has anyone actually seen the short film in its entirety yet?  We'd love to hear what you thought of it."

Gaian.me - Official trailer 2012

Gaian.me - Official trailer 2012 from Steffen K on Vimeo.

The Gaian Project celebrates nature. With its yearly digital album release inlcuding designs,
music and articles it inspires to preserve our planet.

In 2010, Steffen Knoesgaard, Fredrik Ekholm and Simon Holmedal,
created the first ever moving imagery for the community art project
Gaia: The Gaia10 official trailer. Two years later the project has
changed from coordinated yearly releases, into an ongoing collab-
oration as the community run website gaian.me

To mark the new direction of the community, curator Marius Bauer
returned to Steffen and Fredrik and commissioned an updated trailer.
Seeing this as an excellent opportunity to blow off some creative
steam, they conceptualized an idea to recreate the trailer based
on the original thoughts, but updated for 2012.

During the process designer/animator Linus Lundin - a long
time collaborator, joined the project as well as musician
and sound designer Jochen Mader.

"METRO" by Jacob Wyatt

"Jacob Wyatt’s Metro, a student film created with a band of friends at Brigham Young University, has recently been released online after a run on the festival circuit.
The film follows a young girl as she chases a thieving fox through a wondrous underground world. There’s a surprise at the end, but the journey alone is worth the four-minute investment of your time.
Wyatt’s interest in comics is clearly evidenced in his use of panel-like framing throughout the short. The rich palettes and expansive underground settings seem barely contained in the rectangles he uses to pace the action. Like a comic, these panels direct the viewer’s attention while playing with scale, suggesting a world much larger than can be fully expressed on the screen (or the page).
But there’s another side effect of using panels in this particular animation: the panels appear one after the other in a chained sequence that itself echoes the chase playing out on screen. Each time a panel appears, it contains a new surprise in a new area of the screen, just as each turn the girl makes reveals some new spectacle, some new hidden marvel underground as she pursues the elusive fox."

The Angry Video Game Nerd, The Nerdy Video Game

Pretty much everything in this was made in ZBrush, including the lighting & render passes -- for the exception of his glasses and pants (I figured I'd save some time just importing the glasses and pants I already made for another project).

Compositing was bounced back-and-forth between Photoshop and After Effects.

I wanted to try capturing the cheesy-RAD action vibe that many 80s video game covers had, espeically Konami and Ultra games, like Ikari Warriors, Contra, Metal Gear, etc...

It's been mentioned that my design is very close to the original Metal Gear cover on NES.
http://www.retrocpu.com/nes/images/g...over.front.jpg
I have NO IDEA what they're talking about!

If you're not sure who the Angry Video Game Nerd is, you can check him out here http://cinemassacre.com/

Anyways, that's my story.
If you have any comments or critiques, please let me know!

"Buey de Piraña" by Leyenda

"We were invited to present the only masterclass from Chile at the Chilemonos Animation Festival. So to make things harder for ourselves we invented an international competition for all latin american advertising creatives. The goal was to write a script about advertising practices using 2 of the 6 different characters we provided.
The winner would see his/her idea animated by us in a 1.5 minute short (excluding credits). This is the resulting short.
The winning idea was from: Francisco González Serrano from Colombia.
Direction and animation by Leyenda VFX.
The whole case study was presented at our masterclass at Chilemonos Animation Festival on April 29th, 2012.
We hope you enjoy it. Please support us to launch our international contest again this year! We now want to go global with this initiative!"

SHE - "OFFF Barcelona 2012 Main Titles" by UPPERFIRST

"Upperfirst has collaborated with Brosmind to create this fantastically original opening title for this years OFFF festival in Barcelona. This epic and entertaining tale plots the saviour of the earth via a comical space-laser driven solution and then some. Erik Arheden from Upperfirst explains the collaboration with Brosmind; “They were to develop a double-feature comic book and our job was to create the film. After meeting with them in Barcelona earlier this year we went home and developed the script. We had to lock down the story early on as Brosmind would do the comic books parallel to our work with the film and the two projects had to be intimately connected.”  It is refreshing to see such original, offbeat storytelling for what can sometimes be a very serious arena of opening titles."

"Patterned by Nature" for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences

Patterned by Nature was commissioned by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (naturalsciences.org) for the newly built Nature Research Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. The exhibit celebrates our abstraction of nature’s infinite complexity into patterns through the scientific process, and through our perceptions. It brings to light the similarity of patterns in our universe, across all scales of space and time.
10 feet wide and 90 feet in length, this sculptural ribbon winds through the five story atrium of the museum and is made of 3600 tiles of LCD glass. It runs on roughly 75 watts, less power than a laptop computer. Animations are created by independently varying the transparency of each piece of glass.
The content cycles through twenty programs, ranging from clouds to rain drops to colonies of bacteria to flocking birds to geese to cuttlefish skin to pulsating black holes. The animations were created through a combination of algorithmic software modeling of natural phenomena and compositing of actual footage.
An eight channel soundtrack accompanies the animations on the ribbon, giving visitors clues to the identity of the pixelated movements. In addition, two screens show high resolution imagery and text revealing the content on the ribbon at any moment.

"BOTTOM OF THE NINTH" - Worlds first ANIMATED Graphic Novel

"Ryan Woodward, a veteran feature animator who is also responsible for the popular animated short Thought of You, is placing his bets on animated graphic novels. The first issue of his independently produced series Bottom of the Ninth will be released next month for the iPad and iPhone. The trailer above is intriguing as is the comic’s storyline:
The first app, Prologue, will set up the characters and the world of Tao City. Candy Cunningham is an 18 year old girl, born with a phenomenal athletic ability, and a hot head! Her father, Gordy Cunningham is an aged major league player whose athletic abilities have diminished over the years, but his ability to put on a good clown show always draws a crowd and ticket sales. Throughout the story, Candy faces some serious identity issues. The fame and glory of being a Tao City hero conflict with the true meaning of happiness taught to her by her father.

Today's average male teenager is juggling school and sports, playing with every gadget he can get his grubby hands on, socializing across multiple cyber platforms, consuming media and targeted marketing at every turn. All the while, his body transforms, hormones rage, pubes sprout, and puss-filled blemishes explode on every inch of his skin until he finally pulls himself out of the teenage wasteland only to have to get a job and spend the rest of his days staring at a screen in a cubicle. In collaboration with MTV International, we crafted this action-packed look into the plight of the modern teen.

"Transforming Still Life Painting" by Rob and Nick Carter and Moving Picture Company- The Making Of

Many artists have animated famous paintings before, but the husband-and-wife artistic team Rob and Nick Carter have taken it to a whole other level. They created a a three-hour animated version of an Ambrosius Bosschaert still life painting from 1618:

Every aspect of Bosschaert’s painting has been brought to life including each flower stem, insect and background scenery. The film…takes the painted scene from early morning darkness through to noon (where the film exactly resembles the original painting) into dusk and late night.

They worked with a team of nearly two dozen artists from the vfx house Moving Picture Company where they first recreated all of the painting’s elements in Maya. Then they spent two-and-a-half years animating the film. If you go to Rob and Nick’swebsite and click on #10, you can get a taste of the exceedingly subtle and meditative quality of the real-time animation.

This article in Computer Arts offers more details of the challenges involved in creating such a slow-paced animated sequence. The digital artwork, titled “Transforming Still Life Painting,” is being released in an edition of 12 (plus 5 artist proofs). Each one is valued at £50,000 ($80,000). The Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague, which houses Bosschaert’s original painting, has already agreed to acquire one of the Carters’ digital reproductions for its collection.
